He typically sees many patient in which the problem is exacerbated by overwashing of the hands and failure to moisturize. Allergy skin testing can be done to identify the most common allergens which may be responsible for the eruption.  Dr Mejia further emphasizes to his patients the importance of daily moisturization and a proper evaluation to identify the exacerbating culprit.

I noticed a friend of mine had a bunch of bandaids around her fingers and I asked her what happened!!??? I freaked out when she peeled off the bandaid and showed me how deep the layers of skin had dried off.. I dont recall seeing any dryness in her hands, mostly around her fingers. She told me she thinks its stress related and was going to check with a doctor to see what it was. Could this be related to eczema? She also gave birth to her second child a year ago & I cant remember if she mentioned if this kick started during her pregnancy….. I plan to check in with her to see if she's gone to the doctor yet.

Yes. There is a condition called dyshidrotic eczema which commonly occurs on the hands and feets. In some cases, it is described as a tapioca pudding like eruption. In any case, it usually may be exacerbated by a bacterial infection in which cases I sometimes prescribe antibiotics as well as superpotent topical steroid and also moisturization with Aquaphor under cotton gloves at night. She should also avoid frequent handwashing or chemicals. However as a new mother it is common to wash your hands alot in which case she needs alot of moisturization following handwashing.
