The Benefits of Getting Regular Facials

Facials are a great way to take care of yourself and your skin. The physical results from regular facials can include a more youthful, radiant, and clear complexion. Facials are also good for your general well-being, as they are known to promote a more stress-free mental state. Taking time to show yourself a little TLC can have massive impacts, both internal and external!

Improve Blood Circulation

Facials help to improve blood circulation. By doing so, your cells get an uptick of oxygen and nutrients that are carried in the bloodstream. This helps to make the cells healthier and operate more efficiently. It also increases cell turnover, which results in a glowing complexion!

Prevents Aging

As we age, our body slows down on the production of collagen, hyaluronic acid, and elastin, all of which help your skin retain a more youthful look. Facials use massages, serums, and exfoliating techniques that help to boost the production of these substances. This both prevents and can reverse signs of aging.

Detox Your Skin

Detoxing is a great way to help you feel refreshed and peaceful. Facials help to detox the skin with different serums that will remove dirt and impurities. The detox process for your skin aids in your beauty but also keeps your skin healthy. This will allow you to feel more confident in your appearance!

Helps You De-Stress

One of the biggest benefits of getting regular facials is that as an act of self-care, it allows you to destress. This allows some time for deep breathing, reflection, and solitude. Many patients feel relaxed and at ease after receiving a facial. This is not only good for your skin but also for your heart and mental health.

Facials can be an integral part of achieving ultimate skin health, radiance, and a feeling of peacefulness. Not only will your skin look great, but even more importantly, you’ll feel great! Common Questions About the IPL PhotoFacial, Answered

When you look in the mirror, are you starting to notice that your skin doesn’t look as youthful as it used to? Throughout our lives, our skin is exposed to many different factors, including the sun and free radicals. The natural aging process and genetics can also take a toll on how our skin ages. At Jupiter Dermatology, we offer an effective, nonsurgical solution to common signs of aging with the IPL Photofacial treatment. Read on to learn more about this treatment and what it can do for you.

How Does the IPL Photofacial Work?

The IPL Photofacial targets deep layers of the skin to stimulate collagen growth. As the building block of healthy skin, collagen can strengthen and smooth the skin, as well as cause blood vessels to constrict, reducing redness. During treatment, the IPL machine will feel like a small rubber band snapping against your skin, which may cause minimal discomfort, but is very tolerable. One treatment takes only about 30 minutes to complete, which makes it a great “lunchtime” treatment. It is recommended that most patients undergo 3-5 treatment sessions over the course of several months to ensure optimal results.

Can You Benefit from an IPL Photofacial?

So, how do you know if this treatment option is right for you? The best way to determine your candidacy is through a consultation at our office. However, if you can agree to the following statements, you can probably benefit from an IPL Photofacial.

You Want to Prevent Signs of Aging

If you are looking to treat or prevent signs of aging such as age spots and sun spots, rosacea, facial slushing, large pores, dark under eye circles, of fine lines, you may be able to benefit from an IPL treatment. Because this treatment actually stimulates collagen production in the skin, results will be natural-looking and long-lasting.

You Want Fast, Natural-Looking Results

Results from an IPL Photofacial are noticeable about seven days post treatment and will continue to improve after each treatment session. Results are natural-looking, so you’ll look like you, only younger!

You Don’t Want A Lot of Recovery Time

IPL Photofacials require little to no downtime, making it a great option for those with busy schedules. Most patients only report mild redness after treatment, and makeup can help to camouflage any dark spots that may be noticeable until they begin to fade after 7-10 days.

You Are Not Pregnant

Patients who undergo an IPL Photofacial treatment should not be pregnant or breastfeeding, as it is not known how this treatment may affect the unborn child.

Who is Not a Good Candidate for an IPL Treatment?

Individuals with tanned skin or those with naturally dark skin may not be the best candidates for IPL Photofacials. This is because this treatment may result in hyperpigmentation or uneven pigmentation issues in these individuals. During your consultation, our team will thoroughly evaluate your skin color and health to determine your candidacy. Be sure that you are in overall good health and do not have any active infections or open wounds on or near the treatment site.

Is there Preparation for an IPL Photofacial?

Prior to the IPL treatment, patients should avoid excessive sun exposure, self-tanners, and tanning before for 2-4 weeks. You should be very diligent about applying sunscreen every morning to help protect your skin. Also, to avoid bruising, it is recommended that you do not take aspirin, ibuprofen, or Aleve for one week prior to treatment. Also, stop using any skincare products that contain Retin-A at least one week before. Our team will provide you with specific pre-treatment instructions to help ensure optimal results.

Is There Downtime Associated with the IPL Photofacial Treatment?

One of the greatest benefits of the IPL Photofacial treatment is that there is little to no downtime after treatment. Because it uses multiple wavelengths of light instead of laser energy, IPL does not negatively affect the outer layers of skin, making recovery much quicker than traditional laser treatments.

What You Should Know About the IPL Photofacial

The IPL photofacial is a skin laser treatment that is used to penetrate into the skin and treat blemishes and pigmentation, among many other concerns. This treatment is gentler than other skin treatment options, but is still highly effective for skin conditions such as facial flushing, rosacea and reddening, age spots and sun spots, enlarged pores, fine lines, and dark circles under the eyes. Based on your skin condition, your dermatologist will determine if the IPL photofacial is the optimum solution for you and your skin. Here are some important things to know about it.

What is the IPL Photofacial?

The IPL photofacial, sometimes called IPL photorejuvenation, is a laser treatment that can effectively treatment pigment and unfavorable blemishes. It does this by delivering intense pulsed light deep beneath the skin where it can constrict blood vessels, destroy cells that produce melanin, and jumpstart your skin’s collagen production. It doesn’t require any downtime and you can immediately return to your regular schedule, making it preferable to other resurfacing laser or skin treatments.

Our IPL photofacial system uses the Lumenis M22 system, which allows us to perform many different laser treatments, including vein treatment and laser resurfacing, with only one system. This laser system comes with changeable handpiece filters and guides, allowing optimal treatment of your unique areas. This handpiece also contains sapphire lightguides to cool the skin as it comes into contact with the light energy, meaning the surface of the skin is not affected by heat. This makes our IPL photofacial treatments comfortable and worry-free– and with great results, of course.

Candidates For IPL Photofacial

Patients who wish to improve their skin drastically with a gentle treatment and no side effects should consider themselves as prime candidates for the IPL photofacial. However, patients who are very tan or have dark skin can experience complications and hyperpigmentation with this procedure and may be dissuaded. It’s important to cease using any Vitamin A products on the skin before this treatment, since this can cause complications (if you have any hesitations about certain products, be sure to ask). Certain active skin conditions can be cause for delaying this treatment, as well as any recent sunburn or sun damage. For the best determination of your candidacy, you can meet with our skincare specialists who can professionally recommend the best skincare treatment for you.

The IPL Photofacial Procedure

During this procedure, only the damaged skin is targeted and unwanted melanin is eliminated. This occurs through very quick pulses of intense light, which affects only the deeper layers of the skin. This is a fairly quick procedure and requires only around 30 minutes to complete, depending on your treatment area. Patients with lower tolerance may experience some discomfort during this procedure, but we can supply a topical anesthetic if needed. Most patients report feeling something similar to the snap of a rubber band against the skin. This can be accompanied by a warming sensation as the light energy is applied to the skin, but a cooling gel is also applied to prevent too much heat and allow the handpiece to pass easily over the skin. Protective eyewear is required for this procedure, and you will need to remove any contact lenses if you wear them.

Results and Recovery

You may experience some mild redness and swelling afterward, but these symptoms can be easily controlled with the help of an ice pack. You can return to your regular schedule immediately. Most patients undergo a package of 3-5 treatments for best results, spaced about 4 weeks apart in order to give your skin time to recover. It’s very important to care for your skin during the first few days after recovery, most importantly with the use of an SPF30+ when going outside, since your skin will be photosensitive during this time. It’s also important to keep the treatment area moisturized and avoid certain products like skin makeup or Vitamin A, as well as avoiding sweating, perspiring, or exposing the skin to hot water. As with any skincare treatment, do not pick or scratch the treatment area, as this can cause infection. After the initial recovery period, most patients see results with just one treatment.

If you’ve been struggling with pigmentation, wrinkles, scars, or acne, the IPL Photofacial may be your best option. To see what this and other skincare treatments can do for you, contact our office to schedule a consultation with our dermatologists who can recommend a treatment plan.

Microneedling: What You Need to Know

Microneedling, a new technology in cosmetic surgery, actually dates back to 1995. Microneedling is a helpful and especially effective solution for individuals wishing to remove mild scars, boost hair growth, or increase collagen production. Dermatologists have performed extensive research on microneedling to decipher the multi-purpose treatment.

Microneedling produces microscopic punctures in the skin

This unique technique rejuvenates the skin by embedding very fine tiny needles into the skin that do not cause wounds, but enter the skin deep enough to stimulate your body’s healing process in deader layers of the skin. A roller containing the many tiny needles will be rolled across the skin to create these micro-punctures. Once the healing process is stimulated, new collagen and elastin are produced over time, leading to stronger, youthful-looking skin with improved blemishes. The dermaroller is a safe and effective microneedling device comprised of micro-fine needles that range from 0.5 – 2.5 millimeters in diameter.

Microneedling offers fairly immediate results

The results of microneedling are virtually immediate, causing the skin to look luminous, radiant, and supple for a few weeks by increasing blood flow to the area. The inflammation from the needles delivers a glow to the skin in addition to a superficial swelling. The skin will be left feeling soft and hydrated, especially with the use of an aftercare moisturizer and other skin care products.

Microneedling promises improvement over time

After your microneedling session, new collagen and elastin will continue to be produced, leading to improved skin over time. It can take several months for the full results to be seen. A 2008 study reported that four microneedling sessions a month increased the elastin and collagen to up to 400%. The results become prominent six months after the completion of the treatment sessions. As new collagen is generated, the skin becomes stronger and younger-looking with improved elasticity. After optimal treatment sessions, patients can enjoy fewer fine lines and wrinkles, improved acne scars and blemishes, and better skin tone and texture for overall facial rejuvenation.

Microneedling arouses dormant hair follicles

When performed on the scalp, microneedling can stimulate the healing process, leading to increased blood flow and cell regeneration. This can lead to an increase in hair growth to treat thinning hair or balding. A research study conducted on 100 people divided into two groups proved the significant role of microneedling in hair growth. The first group was treated with minoxidil lotion, while the second group was treated with minoxidil lotion and microneedling. 82% of those in the second group reported a 50% improvement in hair growth as compared to the first group where hair growth is reported by only 4.5% of participants.

Microneedling works well when paired with other skincare treatments

Microneedling alone offers long-lasting results, but is optimized further when coupled with lasers and topical treatments. Some anti-aging preparations work well with needle punctures. Microneedling creates channels in the skin to allow products to be more effectively absorbed. You can get the most out of your skin care products and treatments by receiving microneedling first. Microneedling can also be combined with PRP therapy, where your own blood cells are used during the microneedling process. your blood cells contain growth factors that can help you regenerate new skin cells, strengthening the skin. Combining microneedling with radiofrequency can also optimize tissue tightening.

Once-a-month Microneedling plan

For significant skin improvements, microneedling can be done once a month. Treatment sessions will be spaced out to give your skin enough time to heal. Your dermatologist can determine how many sessions you will need to reach your goal results. For more sever skin concerns, you will likely require more treatment sessions to see optimal results. Microneedling can then be performed in the future to maintain the strength and youth of your skin.

Botox vs Fillers: Which is Right for You?

When you look in the mirror, are you starting to see early signs of aging such as lines and wrinkles? If so, you are not alone, as many people begin to notice the early signs of aging in their mid to late twenties. If you are looking for a proven improvement, you may be able to benefit from Botox or filler treatments. While these treatments are similar in that they can treat signs of aging, they also differ in many ways. Read on to learn more about these treatment options and what they can do for you.

Botox

Botox is an injectable treatment made up of botulinum toxin type A that works by temporarily blocking the nerve signals that cause muscles to contract. This results in the elimination of dynamic lines and wrinkles in the face. Botox is most commonly used to treat crow’s feet, horizontal lines on the forehead, and “11” lines between the eyebrows, creating a more relaxed and youthful appearance. Results can last from 3-6 months before a touch-up treatment is needed.

At our office, we also offer Dysport, which is also a neuromodulator like Botox. It works the same way as Botox for the same results.

Fillers

Dermal fillers work differently from Botox in that they smooth signs of aging by adding volume under the skin. Most dermal fillers, such as Juvederm and Restylane, are made with hyaluronic acid, a naturally-occurring substance that attracts and binds water under the skin. Dermal fillers can be used to smooth lines and wrinkles, as well as restore lost facial volume and augment the lips. Results can last anywhere from six months to two years, depending on the filler.

At our office, we offer a number of hyaluronic acid-based fillers such as Juvederm fillers and Restylane, as well as Radiesse, and Sculptra, which use the body’s own collagen to combat signs of aging.

Juvederm XCcreated to smooth moderate to severe parentheses lines and wrinkles around the nose and mouth. Results can last up to one year.

Juvederm Volbellaadds fullness to the lips as well as softens the look of vertical lip lines. Results can last up to one year.

Juvederm Vollurecan soften moderate to severe parentheses and wrinkles by adding volume under the skin. Results can last up to 18 months.

Juvederm Volumaadds volume to correct age-related volume loss in the cheeks to help create a more youthful appearance. Results can last up to two years in the cheek area.

Restylaneadds volume and fullness to the skin to smooth moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. It can also be used to enhance the lips in those 21 years and older. Results can last for 3-4 months before a touch up is needed.

Radiesseis meant to add volume under the skin over time and stimulates the body’s natural collagen to treat signs of aging. Results can last for a year or more.

Sculptraworks gradually over time to stimulate your skin’s own collagen to help restore lost facial volume and signs of aging. Results can last up to two years.

Which One is Right for You?

Overall, the type of treatment needed will depend on the type of wrinkles you are dealing with. If you are dealing with dynamic wrinkles, or wrinkles that are caused by muscle movement, then Botox can help. If you are dealing with lines and wrinkles that occur due to lack of collagen and elastin, then fillers are the answer.

The best way to determine which treatment option is right for you is through a consultation with a board certified dermatologist such as Dr. Mejia. During your consultation, you can discuss your medical history, as well as your personal aesthetic goals, so a treatment plan can be made for you.

The Difference Between Fillers and Neuromodulators

Are you tired of looking in the mirror and seeing those pesky lines and wrinkles? If so, it may be time to look into treatment options for a more youthful appearance. Botox and fillers are both very popular nonsurgical treatment options to date. However, some people may not understand the differences between the two options. Read on to learn more about how these treatments differ, and what signs of aging each can address.

Neuromodulators

Neuromodulators, such as Botox, contain botulinum toxin type A, which works to temporarily relax facial muscles that cause creases and lines to form. These creases and lines are called dynamic wrinkles, and commonly appear on the forehead, between the eyebrows, and at the corners of the eyes. There is no downtime required after neuromodulator treatments, and results can last from 3-6 months.

Fillers

Fillers, unlike neuromodulator, smooth out lines and wrinkles by adding volume under the skin. They are commonly made up of hyaluronic acid, a naturally-occurring substance that attracts and binds water to create youthful plumpness. Fillers can be used to address smile lines, loss of facial volume, lip lines, and to plump the lips. Common fillers include Sculptra, Voluma, Volbella, Radiesse, Juvederm, Restylane, and Belotero. There is little to no downtime needed after filler injections, and results can last from six months to two years, depending on the filler formula used.

As you can see, these two treatment options are very different. If you are interested in learning more about them and which one is right for you, contact Jupiter Dermatology today to schedule your consultation.

Micro-Needling Procedure

Micro-Needling Procedure Detailed

The SkinPen Micro-needling treatment begins by prepping the skin with a topical numbing agent for 20-30 minutes. After the treated area has been numbed, the skin is cleansed and degreased with Acetone to removed any excess makeup and oils.
To perform the micro-needling treatment, a hyaluronic acid gel is applied to the skin. This is also known as a “slick” which allows the SkinPen to glide smoothly on the skin. While gliding the SkinPen on the skins surface, micro channels are created. These micro channels absorb the hyaluronic acid to boost hydration and fill in fine lines and wrinkles. Micro channels also trigger the healing response to stimulate the production of collagen and rebuild healthy stronger skin.
The end goal of micro-needling is to achieve slight pin point bleeding and even erythema (redness)at the treated area. Once the micro-needling treatment is completed, the skin is cleansed with sterile water and HA Lift and Skin Rescue are applied. The micro channels created remain open for 18-24 hours post treatment. Therefore, no other skin products or makeup should be applied during this time.

Other uses of Micro-Needling?

Micro-needling also benefits patients who suffer acne scarring by helping breakup the scar tissue underneath the skin and penetrating deep into it.

Anti Aging Tips : Dr. Mejia Shares Some Easy Tips

A patient recently asked Dr. Mejia about anti aging and what is the best way to remain natural looking but also working to repair and delay the aging process. There are a couple of key things he emphasizes:

Wear Your Sunblock

One of the worst offenders of aging is ultraviolet light. So the use of sunblock especially those that contain UVA and titanium oxide or zinc oxide which is the physical block. Using sunblock on a daily basis especially when outdoors can prevent the harmful rays from penetrating into your skin and damaging the collagen and elastin which causes premature aging and wrinkling. Antiaging Through Exercise

skin-medica

This article  in the New York Times demonstrates histological benefits of improvement of the inner layers of our skin which is composed of collagen and elastin through exercise. It cites a McMaster University study of mice to see if exercise would help in antiaging.

According to the article, these were the results:

The scientists biopsied skin samples from each volunteer and examined them microscopically. When compared strictly by age, the skin samples overall aligned with what would be expected. Older volunteers generally had thicker outer layers of skin and significantly thinner inner layers.

But those results shifted noticeably when the researchers further subdivided their samples by exercise habits. They found that after age 40, the men and women who exercised frequently had markedly thinner, healthier stratum corneums and thicker dermis layers in their skin. Their skin was much closer in composition to that of the 20- and 30-year-olds than to that of others of their age, even if they were past age 65.

While it clearly does not demonstrate reversal of chronic sun damage and wrinkling from the South Florida environment, exercise is important to your overall skin health.

To reverse the signs of aging, we recommend our antiaging skincare program with prescription strength Tretinoin  and medical grade Skinceuticals Vitamin C  and our newest potent skin antioxidant Resveratrol.

We also are offering a new product line, Skin Medica. To learn more about this, you can contact our aesthetician, Daphne  and also about TNS growth factors and topical vitamin C  which also complement our antiaging program.

Patients that desire a quicker faster approach can utilize the multitude of treatments including laser resurfacing, medical  microdermabrasion, and chemical peels to restore their skin to a more youthful look within a week.  In summary exercise is not only good for your heart health but for antiaging and a youthful appearance.
